Ask the Expert: Excelsius3D™ Q&A

Tech using Excelsius3D in the OR
Share post

As Excelsius3D is now available for purchase in the United States, we sat down with the system’s Product Manager to answer some of the pressing questions we’ve received from the field.

  • Globus Medical

Caroline, thank you for taking the time to talk with us about Excelsius3D.

  • Caroline Conrad, PM

Of course. I’m happy I can answer some of the questions that we’ve received over the past few weeks.

  • Globus Medical

First, what safety features are included in Excelsius3D?

  • Caroline Conrad, PM

    This answer is three-fold.

    1. All motion requires a press and hold of a hardware feature. The hardware feature may be the move-enabled trigger on the rear of the handheld controller, the move-enabled sensors on the underside of the wraparound handle, or the move-enabled button on the control panel. When the user is moving the system, release of the move-enabled hardware feature immediately terminates all motion, including the base station and the gantry.
    2. Collision sensors along the perimeter of the detector panel immediately terminate all motion when collision is detected. This is included in a safety spin prior to 3D image acquisition.
    3. Manual override is available for all motion axes, including the base station’s omni-wheels and the gantry. Manual override tools are included in a storage compartment, and manual override instructions are provided in the user manual.

    Does Excelsius3D connect to the hospital’s network/PACS?

  • Caroline Conrad, PM

Ethernet connection is available to connect to a hospital’s network/PACS. Excelsius3D can push files to PACS. Images can also be exported to USB. Excelsius3D complies with cybersecurity standards.

  • Globus Medical

Does Excelsius3D require a special bed?

  • Caroline Conrad, PM

No. Due to the open gantry and small footprint of the system, any bed that works with a C-arm should work for Excelsius3D.

  • Globus Medical

Are Excelsius3D‘s 3D images diagnostic CTs?

  • Caroline Conrad, PM

Excelsius3D is a cone-beam CT system for intraoperative use.

  • Globus Medical

    What connection ports are available?

  • Caroline Conrad, PM

Port connections include Ethernet (x2), DisplayPort, HDMI out, USB (x2), and Foot Pedal.

  • Globus Medical

Do Excelsius3D images work with other navigation systems other than ExcelsiusGPS?

  • Caroline Conrad, PM

Excelsius3D images are saved in standard DICOM format. They can be sent to a hospital’s PACS system and exported to a USB. Navigation systems can import these images, similar to ExcelsiusGPS, which uses registration fixtures and software to navigate using images from other imaging systems.

  • Globus Medical

Wonderful. Thank you again for taking time to speak with us today.

  • Caroline Conrad, PM

    You’re welcome.
